On non-conservativity of Korean floating quantifiers

چکیده

Since the Conservativity Universal (Barwise & Cooper 1981; Keenan Stavi 1986) has been proposed for natural language determiners, several apparent counterexamples have presented in literature. Some of these, such as English only Only students presented, argued to involve an adverbial structure, thus not violating Conservativity. In this paper, we focus on proportional quantifiers 70% Korean, which shown a non- conservative reading when floated out DP (Ahn Sauerland 2017). While Ahn (2017) assume that are adnominal, Korean both adnominal and variants (Ko 2014), leaving open possibility non-conservative is simply resulting from like only. We test predictions accounts Korean. Our results show floating contexts a) cannot be definite-marked, b) intervened by vP-internal (low) adverbial, predicted if quantifier but it adverbial. Based these findings, conclude quantifiers. study makes novel case claim syntactic movement can implicated order explain construal languages under Universal.

(Non)floating Quantifiers in Japanese

This paper suggests that the continuation-passing style (CPS), a classic technique commonly used in computer science but that has recently been successfully applied to linguistics as in the case of Barker (2002) and others, accounts for different interpretations for floating quantifiers (FQ) and non-floating quantifiers (nonFQ). In a determinerless language such as Japanese, the interpretation ...

Semantic Properties of (Non-)Floating Quantifiers and their Syntactic Implications1

It is well-known that, in Japanese, classifier phrases (ClPs) (e.g., 3 classifier) or measure phrases (MPs) (e.g., 3 liters) can ‘float’ in that they can be separated from the host noun, as in (1b) and (2b).2 ClPs and MPs in this configuration are referred to as floating quantifiers (FQs), and their non-floated counterparts in (1a) and (2a) in which ClPs or MPs are adjacent to their host noun a...

Ilona Spector: Hebrew floating quantifiers

This paper addresses the issue of Floating Quantifier phenomena in Hebrew, focusing on the case of the universal quantifier kol (‘all’) and proposes a new, non-derivational analysis in the LFG framework in which the floating and the non-floating quantifier constructions are treated separately. This is based on semantic evidence showing that the quantifiers in these constructions have non-identi...

On the (non-)cumulativity of cumulative quantifiers

This paper investigates some differences between partitive and non-partitive count quantifiers with respect to their ability to participate in cumulative readings and their compatibility with collectively interpreted mixed main predicates. An analysis of quantification is adopted in which a quantifier takes an individual as its first argument. The type of this individual argument together with ...
